Rani Jhansi Rani Laxmi Bai was determined not to give up Jhansi. After all the British in Jhansi had been killed by Indian troops in June 1857 the Rani took over the administration provision until the British returned. During this rebellion many British civilians, including women, and children were killed by the sepoys. The state jewels were confiscated. The fight went on for four days.
She was married to Maharaja of Jhansi, Raja Gangadhar Rao Niwalkar in the year 1842 and was given the name of Lakshmi Bai. The Governor General was not in favour of allowing an eighteen year old rani to rule and opted to take over the state by his infamous Doctrine of Lapse. It was May 1857 and there was not a cloud in the sky over Jhansi. The entire duty of bringing up the daughter fell on her father. According to one theory, as she was sitting by the roadside bleeding away, she spotted a British officer and shot him with her pistol, but in return, the man killed her with his carbine.
