There is substantially more comedy in this, more of a dabbling with the picaresque—far more enjoyable then. Everyone in town wants to persecute him for it, but everyone is too afraid to lead the persecution. So she sits with some other boy, Alfred. This book is basically a satire of the customs and superstitions that Americans practiced and believed during that time. The scene with Tom lost in the cave is notably incredible, but Twain's folksy prose is a delight throughout. Mark Twain is all of those things tied together with a big, beautiful bow.
When she sees Tom, she tries to put the book away as quickly as possible, but rips a page in the process. I don't know if this is a universal kid fear, but I think with me, it stemmed from this book. You won't believe it wrote 150 years ago, as Mark Twain's procedure is simple and fluid. He dies in the end. Back at school, Tom takes the heat for something bad that Becky did, and she starts to like him. She takes care of Tom and his brother, Sid. Huck does not have Aunt Polly or any other caretaker, however, leaving him free to play hooky, sleep outdoors, smoke, avoid bathing, and generally live as he pleases.
Primarily a humorous writer, Twain also is known for his descriptions of American life in the 19th century. I found myself shuffling between the text and the appendix to find out words and phrases being used in that part of American during the 19th century. Then a new girl came to school: Becky Thatcher. All that humorous content is being quoted in a voice broken by giggles. In perhaps one of the most famous scenes of the novel, Tom tricks the neighborhood boys into completing his entire chore.
My second prediction is that Tom will have to sustain many tribulations throughout the story line. They decide to become pirates. Funny enough, their conversation turns from the discussion of chewing gum and circuses to marriage and love. Tom and Huck watch in horror, realizing nothing is going to be done about Injun Joe. So they steal a raft and leave.
Joe wants to go home but Tom says no. He has been severely socially ostracized because he is part Native American and part white. Then they decide to go to Jackson Island in the middle of the night. The whole town is in attendance: Aunt Polly, Sid, Mary, Tom; the widow Douglas; Mayor and Mrs. Tom is one of those who envies Huck greatly.
